Overview

What high pure gases is, and why the grade matters

High pure is a grade, not a gas. The N notation says how many nines: 4.5 means 99.995%, 5.0 means 99.999%. What sits behind the number is cylinder preparation, valve selection, moisture control and the analysis that proves the fill, because at these levels the cylinder itself becomes the main source of contamination.

The applications that need this are the ones where a trace impurity does visible damage: a wafer yield that drops, a chromatogram with a baseline that will not settle, a pharmaceutical process that fails its own audit. In each case the cost of the failure is far larger than the difference in the price of the gas.

Handling follows the individual gas rather than the grade, so read the documentation for the specific product supplied. High pure cylinders use dedicated valves and regulators, and fitting the wrong regulator contaminates the cylinder as well as the process.
