What ammonia is, and why the grade matters

Anhydrous ammonia is ammonia with the water taken out, stored as a liquid under moderate pressure. It is one of the most efficient refrigerants available, moving more heat per kilogram than the synthetic alternatives, and it remains a primary feedstock across chemical and fertiliser manufacturing.

It is also the most hazardous gas in this catalogue. Ammonia is toxic, corrosive to the eyes and airways, and detectable by smell long before it reaches a dangerous concentration, which is a warning worth acting on rather than getting used to. Sites that run it well treat handling procedure as part of the equipment, not paperwork around it.

Anhydrous ammonia is toxic and corrosive. Handle it only with trained personnel, full face and body protection, and an emergency plan that includes water supply and evacuation. Liquid ammonia causes severe cold and chemical burns on contact. Storage and handling must meet the applicable PESO and statutory requirements for your site.
